This is a special award created by our title sponsor Wm Morrisons PLC to recognise individuals or groups who work tirelessly to improve their local community.
The 2006 winner, the 'Watch Us Grow' initiative, spearheaded by the centre manager, Ann McCulluch, transformed a garden in Falkirk's Palacerigg Country Park. It is now a hub of activity for more than 30 adults with learning difficulties and mental health problems, growing organic vegetables and herbs and plants, which are sold to park visitors. This helps the students to gain vital selling experience. The students are also involved in recycling initiatives.
Sighthill Library were the 2007 Community champions. There innovative approach has paid off by transforming the lives of teenagers in the area. Complainets about young people have dropped by 75%, antisocial behaviour is down 60% and library membership has doubled. The women have worked hard to dispel the 'tweedy old crow' myth about librarians by organising things like football team Sighthill United and the Footballers Wives club for the girls with beauty sessions.
This year Morrisons will once again be selecting four Community Champions and donating £250 towards each of their worthy projects. Each of these finalists will be invited to attend the awards ceremony on the 20th September, where one of them will be announced as the overall winner and receive a further donation of £1000 towards their cause.
